শিল্পীর জীবনের প্রথম স্কেচখাতা। সময়পর্ব ১৯৫২। সবেমাত্র আর্ট কলেজে শিল্পশিক্ষার্থী হিসেবে প্রবেশ করেছেন তিনি। এই খাতা তাঁর চলার পথে পথে নিসর্গকে যে দেখা, সেই দেখার জার্নাল। তারপর কেটে গেছে সত্তর বছরেরও বেশি সময়। আজ শিল্পী মনে করেন, ‘যা দেখি তা আঁকি না, যা আঁকি তাই দেখি’। আর, এই খাতাটি হল শিল্পীর সেই ভৈরবকাল, যখন এই প্রকৃতির ছন্দতে তিনি যা দেখছেন সেই দেখাকেই ধরেছেন রেখায় রঙে। বস্তুত, কেবলমাত্র গণেশ হালুইয়ের শিল্পজীবনেই নয়, এই স্কেচখাতা ভারতীয় শিল্পকলার ইতিহাসের এক অত্যন্ত জরুরি সম্পদ।

This sketchbook marks an important period of the life of the artist. It denotes the phase when he reached Santiniketan after resigning from the service at the Rastrapati Bhawan, Delhi. Meanwhile he travelled Baghdad and published an illustrated diary of his stay. Beside, innumerable line drawings, this sketchbook presents some bits and pieces of notes by the artist that define the relation between the creator and his ambience. The mud-house of the artist in Santiniketan, primarily took shape in this sketchbook. The book also records the obvious changes that found place in the in the paintings of the artist because of his arrival at Santiniketan leaving the beaurocratic atmosphere of the Rastrapati Bhawan behind.
